Good Sam Expanding to Serve Kennett Square!

During Good Sam’s 20+ year existence, there have been several instances in which we were approached by other organizations seeking to partner with us. After starting our ministry in Phoenixville, we expanded to Ephrata in 2011 when we were invited to take over a shelter program for women and children. In 2017, we were asked to take on programs being run by an organization in Coatesville and Lancaster City. Good Sam has always been seen as a trusted and respected service provider in our region, and I am delighted to announce that once again Good Sam is expanding our reach by continuing a shelter program for men in Kennett Square, previously operated by a non-profit called His Mission.

Founded in 1986, originally as a soup kitchen at Bethel AME Church in Kennett Square, His Mission has faithfully served the homeless population of Kennett Square by providing compassionate care. Nearly two years ago, His Mission approached Good Sam to begin exploring the option of His Mission transferring ownership of their property and program to Good Sam. We engaged in many conversations and after prayerful consideration and discernment, together we determined that the work and heartbeat of our organizations are in alignment.

After a nearly two-year process of thoughtful consideration, His Mission recently donated their 8-bedroom facility to Good Sam. This is a tremendous gift and we are incredibly excited that Good Sam is expanding to southern Chester County. Good Sam is committed to building on the legacy of His Mission. We anticipate being able to serve 15 – 20 men daily in this home with emergency shelter and transitional housing programming.

Now with 5 locations providing shelter and housing services across Lancaster and Chester Counties, Good Sam serves up to 250 men, women, and children every single day.

As a result of this very exciting expansion, our operating expenses will increase by $150,000 annually. However, we are fortunate to have the sound framework and scalability at Good Sam to allow this growth to happen extremely efficiently. For just $27 per person per day, at our Kennett Square location, Good Sam will be able to provide housing, food, supplies and casework to help transform the lives of those we serve.
